How Can I Avoid Accidents During Federal Holidays?

Federal holidays like the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas are a time for celebration and fun, but it can also be a time for accidents. With increased alcohol consumption and more opportunities for distractions from family, there are plenty of opportunities for accidents to occur.

It’s important to take extra precautions during these busy times to keep you and your loved ones safe. This includes things like staying alert while driving, avoiding drinking and driving, being mindful of pedestrians in busy areas and double checking your home safety measures. There are several safety precautions you can take to ensure you and those around you have an enjoyable and accident-free holiday.

Car Accidents

Whether you plan to travel long distances to visit family and friends or run shopping errands, it’s almost guaranteed you’ll encounter increased traffic, impatient drivers and unfavorable weather conditions in and around Atlanta.

To stay safe on the road and decrease your risk of an accident during a holiday, be sure to follow these tips:

  • Ensure your vehicle is in good condition: Before setting out on a long journey, ensure your car is in good working order. Make sure the oil has been changed and all fluid levels are full. Check the brakes, tires, lights and windshield wipers for any wear or damage as well.

  • Slow down when driving during holidays: To reduce the risk of an accident, drive at a safe speed, no faster than posted speed limits, so you have more time to react if something unexpected happens on the roadway.

  • Avoid distractions while driving: Distracted drivers are one of major causes of accidents during holidays. Avoid eating or drinking while behind the wheel as this can make it difficult to keep your eyes on the road or quickly maneuver your vehicle should the need arise. Other ways to avoid distracted driving include turning off your cell phone notifications before driving and keeping conversations with passengers to a minimum.

  • Avoid drinking and driving: Always plan for a safe ride home if you are attending a party or get together where alcohol will be present. Designate someone who will remain sober throughout the night to drive or call a taxi or rideshare.

  • Stay alert at all times: To remain focused and alert after hours spent driving, pull over every two hours for rest break or have you and other vehicle occupants take turns driving.

Home Accidents

Even if you’re spending a holiday at home, some holiday-related activities can increase the risk of accidents at home.

Luckily, by taking some simple steps to prepare your home before the festivities begin, you can avoid any unwelcome surprises and dangerous accidents.

Be mindful of decorations: Ensure all decorations are securely fastened to walls and ceilings, keep cords away from high-traffic areas and avoid using candles or open flames.

Practice safe cooking: Keep an eye on the stove while you’re cooking, use oven mitts when handling hot items and make sure no flammable materials are too close to a heat source.

Secure your home: Make sure windows and doors are locked before leaving the house for extended periods of time during the holidays.

Watch out for visitors: If you’re expecting guests this holiday season, take extra safety precautions to avoid unwanted accidents. These precautions include placing mats at entrances so guests can wipe their feet before entering your home, checking stairways for loose boards or carpeting, keeping small objects off stairs, checking outdoor lighting fixtures to ensure they work properly and making sure any toys you have are age-appropriate for the children who will be spending time at your home.
